Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study

Who Can Apply: Applicants must possess a college undergraduate degree, be pursuing an academic, professional or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language, be at or near an advanced level in the language, be able to devote oneself exclusively to language study during the term of the grant, and be a US citizen or permanent resident. GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended.

Description: Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one year of advanced level language study in approved language programs in East or Southeast Asia. Qualifying languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer, Malaysian, Tibetan, Thai, and Burmese. Consideration will be given to other East or Southeast Asian languages on an individual basis. Applicants apply separately to approved language programs.

Award: The award is intended to cover basis expenses at a graduate student level necessary to pursue a year of full-time language study in Asia. This includes tuition or tutoring fees, plus a stipend for travel, living and study expenses.

National Deadline: December 30, 2024

Approved language programs include: the Inter-University Center in Yokohama, Japan; the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan; the Inter-University Program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, china, Yale-in-China at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University in Korea; and the Korean Language Education Center at Sogang University in Korea. For languages other than Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, approval of language programs will be considered on an individual basis. Private tutorials are possible where language programs are absent or inadequate.
