Udall Undergraduate Scholarship - Environment

Are you a sophomore or junior strongly committed to making a difference in environmental issues through your studies, community service, and career plans? Do you have an outstanding record of activism, leadership, and research on environmental issues? Do you have an excellent record of undergraduate studies, internships and/or research related to the environment? 

Learn about the Udall Undergraduate Scholarship Environment program, which focuses on conservation, environmental stewardship, and environmental policy. The program seeks to identify future environmental leaders in fields including public policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics.

In early August Udall Scholars take part in a five-day conference in Tucson, Arizona where they meet with other Scholars, elected officials and environmental leaders. Scholars also gain access to a network of environmental policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv. Students from all majors are eligible.

Award amount: The Udall Scholarship provides up to $7,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses. 

Duration: The Udall Scholarship provides one year of support. Scholars are required to participate in the five-day conference in early August. 

UMD campus deadline:  Monday, January 18, 2026  – This is to be considered for campus nomination. 

Who can apply: U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents - sophomores, juniors - GPA of 3.5 or higher recommended - all majors 

IMPORTANT: All UMD candidates for Udall Scholarships must be nominated by the University.

Attention First- and Second-Year Students!

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for U.S. citizens to study in the United Kingdom (UK). These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (U.S. citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to participate in a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.

Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens;
  • have a GPA of 3.7 or higher;
  • be 18 or older;
  • be a second or first year student, and/or have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes;
  • cannot have spent more than 4 weeks outside the U.S. in the last 5 years. Exceptions are made for refugees and/or students from a different cultural background who have spent time abroad due to family emergencies.

Please note: First-generation college students and students who receive or are eligible for need-based aid are encouraged to apply. 


The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance.

  • Lancaster University (Film)
  • King's College London (Modern Britain: Institutions, Power, and People, and Critical Approaches to Sustainability and Development)
  • Queen's University Belfast (Culture, Identity, History, and Politics)
  • University of St. Andrews (Scotland's History: Kingdom, Nation, People)

Hudson Institute Political Studies Summer Fellowship - Virtual Info Session for University of Maryland Undergraduates - Nov. 17


DESCRIPTION: Join Hudson Institute Political Studies leadership for an information session about our Summer Fellowship. Hudson Institute Political Studies offers a fellowship in political theory and practice to college students and recent graduates. All students participate free of charge, reside in complimentary housing in Washington, D.C., and receive a stipend of $3,000. All undergraduates are welcome to apply. 

This program includes four components:

  • Rigorous seminars led by master teachers on topics in political theory and public policy.
  • A series of policy workshops led by policy analysts and experienced government officials.
  • distinguished speaker series where national leaders from government, business, journalism, the military, and the academy provide unmatched insight into the true nature of public service and the country’s most pressing issues.
  • series of outings and events, where students travel to places of national and historical interest in order to view politics through other lenses.

ELIGIBILITY: All undergraduates of any majors, citizens and non-citizens, who are proficient in English. See  FAQ's by clicking here.
